Sling Project: annual measurements of “slings”

What is a sling? Sling is Team Echinacea shorthand for a plant that was initially found as a seedling (with cotyledons!) in one of our remnant populations. After finding the sling, we censused it annually up to the present, unless it died.

This dataset has been called “T2” and Sling Re-finds.

This file contains one record per sling per year, in other words all information about seedling re-finds. It houses information about seedling survival, plant status, plant size, and near neighbors. There should exist data from the 2007 sling cohort through the current year of seedling re-finds, and the table is uploaded here in long format.

slingCd: this is a unique identifier for each sling. It is in the format, “siteName-searchYear-matPlant#-slingID” (character) This identifier remains unique for each plant (each sling) across the entire experiment–all years & all sites.
year: year the re-find record was taken (integer)
slingYr: year the seedling was originally found (integer)
plantID: identifier for each sling within a circle (character). Note that this identifier was the one initially assigned to the seedling and was unique only within that circle in that initial year. This id was used on paper maps and sometimes edited on paper.
site: site where the seedling resides (character)
focalCd: this is a unique identifier for each circle. It is unique to the year the maternal plant or random point was searched for seedlings. It is in the format, “siteName-searchYear-matPlant#” (character)
circle: tag number of maternal circle in year of re-find (numeric)
tagNumber: tag number of sling if it has a tag (numeric)
timeStamp: date, and sometimes time, of data collection. Many records have an incomplete or missing timeStamp becuase new records were generated based on data from subsequent years (date)
status: plant status in re-find year. Status is based on field observation OR was updated to reflect if a “missing” plant in one year was found alive in a subsequent year (character)
ld: living during observation year / 1 = yes, 0 = no, 1.1 = alive; record added for “basal based on subsequent yrs living”, 1.2 = alive; record changed from “can’t find” to “basal based on subsequent yrs living.” 1.1 and 1.2 statuses were added to indicate that these were changed from initial observations, whole 1 and 0 are based directly on field observations. In future iterations of the dataset, if slingCds with 0’s in the dataset are found to be alive in later years, change the 0 to 1.2; if there was no record in previous years, add an ld of 1.1 for missing years (numeric)
newLD: living during observation year / 1 = yes, 0 = no; all “basal based on subsequent years” = 1; statuses in this column are informed by the ld field – all 0s in ld = 0 for newLD, and all 1s, 1.1s, and 1.2s = 1 for newLD (binary)
rosetteCt: number of rosettes for observed living plants (integer)
lfCt: number of basal leaves for observed living plants (integer)
longLfLength: length of longest basal leaf (cm) for observed, living, plants (numeric)
nr(1-4)Dist: distance (cm) to 1st-4th nearest neighboring plant within 12 cm (numeric)
nr(1-4)Dir: cardinal direction to 1st-4th nearest neighboring plant within 12 cm (character)
nr(1-4)Id: plant ID of 1st-4th nearest neighboring plant within 12 cm (character)
note: field and data wrangling note about record (character)
newNote: note about records added due to subsequent years data (character)
