exPt 1 Core

The core dataset contains annual fitness measurements for all Echinacea plants planted in our main common garden experimental plot (exPt 1), as well as identification and location information. Here is a list of fields in the dataset:

cgPlaId: common garden plant Id (numeric)
row: common garden location coordinate / easting or row coordinate in meters (numeric)
pos: common garden location coordinate / northing or position coordinate in meters (numeric)
yrPlanted: year planted (numeric)
We annually assess the following for each plant:
ld: living during observation year / 1 = yes, 0 = no (binary)
fl: flowering during observation year / 1 = yes, 0 = no (binary)
hdCt: head count / if flowering, count of heads per plant for observation year (numeric) *
achCt: achene count / count of achenes per plant for observation year (numeric) **

* here are the rules for what we consider a head: If a head was measured as normal, bent, tilted or indented (or combinations of those) it will be considered a countable head. (hdStatusCd 1-4,12-16) If a head was listed as dud, crisp, no florets, vertical development, no hd, whole head weird, or gone it is not counted as a head. However, head status is adjusted based on achenes counted: Heads are counted only if the achene count from that head is greater than 0. Heads with 0 achenes are not included in the head count for the plant.

** here is an explanation for negative numbers in acheneCt: We use “-9999” as code for “missing data” in the achCt field for each head. If the plant had multiple heads & a count was missing for one of the heads, -9999 was summed together with the good achene count(s). So far, we don’t have any instances where more than one head has a missing achene count per plant; but if we do, I’ll make a note of it. So if hdCt > 1 & acheneCt < 0 adding 9999 to acheneCt will give you the acheneCt for the heads that are not missing data.

This update to the exPt1 core dataset includes survival and flowering data through 2022 and achene count data through 2016.

A note about head counts: previous versions of the core dataset included “gone” heads in the head count for a plant. With this and future versions of the dataset, “gone” heads will not be included in head counts. See “**here are the rules for what we consider a head” above for further explanation.

cg1CoreData.csv will remain the most up to date link to the core dataset.

This update of the core dataset corrects a problem with missing data for one plant in 2007 in the 1999S garden. Echinacea Project volunteers continue to make progress counting achenes. Check back for soon for updated achene counts.

A note about head counts: previous versions of the core dataset included “gone” heads in the head count for a plant. With this and future versions of the dataset, “gone” heads will not be included in head counts. See “* here are the rules for what we consider a head” above for further explanation.

I just added 2010 achene counts to the core dataset! Echinacea Project volunteers continue to count achenes.
I hope to include 2011 counts by the end of June.

I just updated the core dataset with annual survey data for 2013! In July & August we visited every planted location to assess survival and flowering status for every plant. The 2013 data for survival, flowering, and head count are included in this version of the dataset.

I just added achene counts from 2009 to the core dataset: cg1CoreData.csv.
Based on the achene counts from the lab, I revised head counts. In the field, we encounter some very small heads that do not actually flower. During harvest time, it’s often difficult to assess if these heads have flowered. We can easily assess if a head has flowered when we count achenes in the lab. In these instances, counts of heads per plant may be updated based on achene count data.

This is going to be the permanent repository for the common garden core dataset. cg1CoreData.csv will be the permanent name for the most recent dataset. The dataset will be updated annually after each field season with survival, flowering, and head count data. We will also update the dataset when achene counts are completed in the lab.
To date, the dataset includes achene counts through 2008.
